Small Hotels of Turkey / Küçük Oteller Kitabı
(ed. 2007, ISBN 978975521376-7)
- English
A hop and a skip from the main bridge across the Kızılırmak is Mr Gürdal's hotel, a dusty rabbit warren that spreads itself out across what were once seven private houses. Mr Gürdal is an artist whose black and white sketches, liberally scattered about the hotel, depict aspects of the pottery-producing town of Avanos now pushed firmly into the back streets. He is also a boarder whose collections - ancient keys, pieces of pottery, old wooden cupboard doors - fill every spare surface.
In summer guests slump on couches beneath a shady grapevine; many are foreign tourists on whirlwind tours of Turkey. Two stone-arched rooms offer on-site dining. Mr Gürdal's eye for the arty seems to have let him down when it comes to the bed coverings which look to have strayed from a teenage boy's bedroom. Otherwise, this is a relaxing place to stay.
Anahtar, kürek, at koşum, hepsi duvarlarda.
